Journal 1989/2015: Irises (part 2)

iris ink and pencil comp

My colored pencil and ink drawings of irises were much more successful than the painted ones.  I still like the 1989 version (above left) the best of all.  The one I did recently was at the end of the day; I even wrote “tired” at the bottom.  It’s not as delicate, but still seems iris-like.

I also did pencil without ink; on the left, in the normal way, and on the right I took out a flower and drew it upside-down.

Then I did one just in ink.  The ink drawing was all done with my quill dip pen.

I love every single one of these. Just curious, in ’89, were you drawing every day? I think our moods influence our art, too, affects how hard we press. The older ones look like a lighter touch was used. I’m also wondering if the colored pencil brand was the same? Nice work. I tried one on Sunday in Tombow marker. I may share. These are really lovely!

When I was doing the journal I was taking a class, so I did do it every day. Before and after the class, definitely not. And I have no idea what brand of pencil, it may have even been multiple brands like I used this time. I used to buy single pencils to match the colors I needed for the graphs I was doing for my customers, so I have a big plastic bin of pencils of multiple brands. It was definitely a lighter touch though, you’re right.

I love seeing you two have conversations with yourself! I know it’s silly, but I smile every time. :)))

These are all marvelous — I’ve always loved botanical drawings. I agree with createarteveryday — every one of these is great — but I really like the ink one; I don’t have the confidence for that just yet, but thanks for inspiring me to sharpen my pencils while my favorite spring flowers are still in bloom.
