The Horned Priest Ryogen

the horned priest ryogen s

Another sketch from the Japanese art book I took out of the library.  Also known as Tsuno Daishi, Ryogen was a priest in 10th century Japan who has become through legend a supernatural being.  The founder of the warrior monks, he is believed to have great power to ward off evil, and his picture is hung on buildings for that purpose.

I read recently that many in China now hang pictures of Chairman Mao for the same reason.

Wonderful drawing! From my view, your shadow placement gives him an embossed look. Very cool! Thanks for the history lesson.

I thought this was a relief sculpture. Relief? Is that spelled right? Love the subject and your rendering.

Funky! I also thought it was a relief sculpture. 🙂

Mao did try to set himself up to be like a deity. Take away one monarchy and substitute another (while calling it communism)…
