Such a lot of images that could be seen as disturbing, yet the child isn’t afraid, so why should we be? She sees what we don’t.

That’s what struck me right away from the illustration…the girl is clearly not afraid. Fear often gets in the way of what we are able to see, as I know from my own experience.

No, she has a determined, even a fierce expression, and she’s brandishing that skull as though she really doesn’t care.
