Mask
In the intersection between
earth and air—in the space between
coming and going, was and to be—
The other side is inverted
consumed created inserted—
energy takes form—threshold, key–
Opposites crushed in collusion–
time transfigured by illusion—
door opening to nobody.
Sue Vincent’s photo prompt, above, was the inspiration for my poem and art. I painted the fire, then cut it into squares, rearranged it, and stitched it together. The poetry form is nove otto.
I don’t know why, but this photo reminded me of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Is that his hat burning…?

Thanks Sue. This poem ended up very far from where it started…

But as always, worked beautifully to bring the whole together 🙂

I love the stitched one, so much more than its parts

Thanks. I wasn’t quite sure to go with the painting, but I did feel it needed stitching of some sort. This worked well (and I have other ideas for future paintings…)

The whole process of you creating your vivid art, cutting it up, then rearranging the pieces goes perfectly with your poem.

Thanks. They kind of evolved together. I had other ideas when I started…

Wow! Love your vibrant colors and the variegated thread you used to stitch it together. Is it on fabric or paper? Great poem too! 👍😄

Thanks Jill. Fire! the colors do vibrate. I used 2 strands of black and 2 of white together to stitch. You can also get a lot of richness using close colors together like that. It’s stitched on paper…my favorite stitching medium of the moment.

It reminds me of some leaf prints I did on paper using fabric dye and salt. I then stitched several squares together. I like your idea of creating your own thread combination. Cheaper too! 🎨👍

Totally see that fire and your poem speaks to the subsequent patched art quilt. Very engaging, Kerfe.

Somehow I missed this one. I love all the opposites and between of the poem–and the energy, like the Big Bang. I always enjoy how you stitched together paintings, too.

Thanks Merril. Hard to keep up with everything!
The elements seem to be following me around these days. Or maybe I’m just more aware of it.
