Beyond Years

“With all their ancient faces like rain-beaten stones”
–Yeats

What remains.
Gone silent.  Unseen.
Raining still.
Dark, cold, hard.
Unchanting verses of stone
through fossilized eyes.

I’ve gone back to Day Three of Jane Dougherty’s Month with Yeats.  The references for the drawings were photos of medieval sculptured faces.

I love the association of stone—so still and dead—and rain—vibrant and alive. They are both just elements, neither alive nor dead, but they combine to create an image of a fossilised memory.

Wonderful! Ancient and weathered, and the people they are based on are also long gone–but once they were vibrant and alive.

I enjoyed looking at each stone sketch and each mark made. There is a warmth from the paper and the pencil.
