Turning

turning 2s

Demented, unwanted, our dances are old–
we do not fear the dark.

We cast into circles, the moon for to hold–
demented, unwanted, our dances are old.

Our revenants echo as mountains unfold–
like orbiting stars, their shadows embark.

Demented, unwanted, our dances are old–
we do not fear the dark.

Inspired by Sue Vincent’s prompt photo, above, and also a conversation I had with a friend about a movie she had seen about Africa’s witch camps.

I did two different collage interpretations.

The poem is a triolet.  I’m still caught in repetition and rhyme.

Societies all over the world attempt to contain and isolate the difficult and problematic, the despairing, the abandoned, the female, the elderly, the ill, children, anyone inconvenient–there are witch camps everywhere if you care to look.

I like the collage, and your poem is so true. Some people think these things are no longer done, but as you say, those who are different are often isolated.
As for those labeled witches, in my book research, I read about women who were gang raped and killed in Papua New Guinea because they were believed to be witches. It is a particularly dangerous place to be a woman, or different.

I like the repetition and rhyme of your poem. It helps me to understand the what you are saying. To me, the collage reflects a spiritual world.

This is both brilliant and tragic, Kerfe. I agree, there are indeed witch camps everywhere… we just dress them differently and hide them from ourselves…

Very powerful poem, Kerfe – along with the hypnotic collage. (The black cats!) You have a gift for bringing it all together. Can’t believe in this day and age women are still having to fear witch camps – the literal ones, along with the symbolic. Alas!

Nicely penned! In fact, I just uploaded a ‘Triolet’ of my own onto my blog. It’s linked below. I’d love it if you would have a look over it and leave me some tips on how to improve. I’m sure I could learn a lot from you. I hope you like it!
