Collateral

collateral 2s

The sands of time flow
out of the hourglass, and years
fall backwards, crossing

through endings to ways that lead
before, accumulating—

Neither time nor life
can be saved and spent later–
it is always now

or yesterday retreating,
a hazy remembering,

the details broken
into shreds of brittle bones,
skull lurking beneath

a façade as fragile as
a wine glass, spilling with blood—

All those shiny words
lining flower-strewn pathways–
unvoiced, fallow, mute.

I love this… just perfect with the red-on-grey of your artwork.

I love this. Of course you know I would with my time obsession. 🙂 That last stanza is wonderful, as is the art.

A fitting response, Kerfe, the past always obscure and no words able to resurrect it.

My fave: Neither time nor life
can be saved and spent later–
    it is always now.
And I am so drawn to the art. I see a face – a human or puppy or bear…. One eye in the top. I’m so drawn to it.

I can see I am not the only one who was struck by your phrasing of a truth so easy to know but more challenging to live: “Neither time nor life
can be saved and spent later–
it is always now” For me, a strong poem overall. I also like your blurred image of the Rose.
