Child of the Universe
The NaPoWriMo prompt today was looking for surrealistic imagery in a poem. I’m not sure this exactly fits, since it’s mostly image, but the collage box Oracle tends to brevity in its words.
She
started a ritual–
the answer
on fire,
the seeds realized
as dark matter
I also have a poem, “Numerology”, which is somewhat surrealistic, posted this month at Visual Verse. You can read it here.
This collage was inspired by Paul Klee’s angel series.
I like how it goes off of the page. Excellent! I do collage in a similar format but have never extended it beyond the page.

I’m not good at planning my spaces. So this happens quite often, but why not? I say.

No reason at all 🙂

Kerfe, I just read your piece at Visual Verse. It is surreal. It feels like being gaslighted but gaslighting that is wanted. I just signed up for Visual Verse newsletter. Sounds like it’s a race to get your work submitted to them each month?

Yes and no. You need to submit by the 15th but they don’t always post their selections right away. I’ve had quite a few published, but also many are not. They always get a good cross-section of writing, and it’s fun to participate even if you are not chosen.

Thanks for the info.

I’ve done it a few times too. There’s also the Ekphrastic Review that posts a fortnightly challenge.

Thank you Jane. It looks like I might give it a try for May. Is Ekphrastic Review a WP site or elsewhere? Charlie from dVerse was just published at Vita Brevis.

I’ve had a few things in it, and they publish short prose as well as poetry. I like the painting prompts very much, but you can choose an artwork yourself and write to it outside the challenge. If they like it, they’ll publish it. Vita Brevis I’ve found relatively easy to get into, except when it comes to competitions where they have more choice, so I’m guessing they don’t really like my stuff that much 🙂

Look at their current challenge. You could write a novel to this one.

Thanks for pointing it out! I hadn’t seen it, thought they meant next Saturday. That’s what I meant when I said you choose a piece of art and write to it.

Yes, that’s a good one too. And I saw your poem too–full of beautiful imagery and stark truth, as usual.

Thank you. Jade has just pointed it out to me. I hadn’t seen it. It’s the time zone thing. They said it would be published Saturday; I thought it must be next Saturday when it wasn’t up by lunchtime here.

She’s up to no good, this one. Or perhaps giving us our just deserts?

She got something in mind but she’s not telling.

Just read the Visual Verse poem. It’s a deep one. The straight lines and numbers giving certitudes that stretch out to infinity.

Thanks Jane. Numbers are a mystery, and yet we manipulate them and things happen. I’m still figuring it out.

Numbers seem magical to people (like me) who are not at all mathematical. They probably seem magical to people who are too.

That’s true. Full of magic.

Forgot to mention your ongoing Junk Mail Art in our other conversation! I love the poem and the answer taking flight from the woman’s open mind.

Thanks! I didn’t do collage for months, but I’m enjoying its return.

Excellent collage. A nice mysterious poem, Marta. Her eyes says it all dark and deep.

Dark and deep…that’s just right. Thanks Marta!

Congratulations on your Visual Verse poem. It is mysterious, as is this one, in a different way–more to her motivation, perhaps. The collage makes me uneasy, so perhaps, like Jane, I think she’s up to no good.

Thanks Merril. Klee’s angels are mostly disconcerting, which is why I find them so interesting to work from.

Fascinating collages and a lovely Visual Verse poem.
Thank you for reminding me that in April VV posted my piece too for the first time. I was so happy. 😉 Here it is: https://visualverse.org/submissions/the-precondition/
Today the new image is coming up. Not there yet, I’ve just checked.
