and its shadow
Opening my eyes
in the morning this day
into grey light
black branches suspended
between my window and the sky–
the calendar says spring
as I pull the comforter closer
and my thoughts wander
into the kitchen.
My body soon follows
the promise of coffee
warming bare feet
cold floor
distracted mind–
Looking out now–
is that a robin?
No, a sparrow, still–
but the blue jay tells me
he’s somewhere close by.
When will the world reverse
itself, green, full once again
of uncontained expectation?
I sip my coffee,
the aroma comfortable,
friendly.
Its bitter taste
sharpens my mind.
There’s a black hole
covering the front page
of the news.
Oh yes.
No surprise there.
NaPoWriMo wanted a poem about a season and our senses and a question. This came from notes I wrote the morning early in April that I picked up the newspaper outside to see a photo of a black hole taking up the entire top half of the page.

Besides being a real thing, a black hole is such a versatile metaphor. What a contrast between the view out the window and the black hole that is the news. Well done!

Thanks Diana. It’s useful indeed. Although I wish it didn’t apply to the news…

I first heard about the black hole photo on the BBC news, and I couldn’t wait to see the photo. I agree with D. though–excellent metaphor.

Thanks Merril. I saved that newspaper. It’s sitting on top of a pile of unfiled papers, so I see it every day (after NaPoWriMo, cleaning up is the order of the day…)

I’m impressed that you have filed papers. 😉

Your art has the look of green trying its hardest to break through.

And it finally did! Thanks Ken.
but I still haven’t seen a robin…

My garden is primarily wild flours and grasses, with irises and lilies. I just spent an hour this morning watching a robin gather dry grass for a nest.

Great art work, M and I loved your poem when you open and see a new day outside your window with a cup of coffee in your hand.

I enjoy the closeups so much!

Thanks. Sometimes the close ups are more interesting than the entire piece at once. You see different things for sure.

Hi Kerfe, we are finally having Spring here… hope you are too! 🌿 Coffee is something that gets me going in my morning too. ☕️

Thanks Jill. I always need my caffeine!
Spring has arrived although some days it’s still not sure it wants to be here…
