Solstice Moon
horizon
trails flames of solstice–
moon shines dark
Inspired by Nina’s gouache painting, above, and Frank Tassone’s #Haikai challege to choose our own summer kigo.
Nina’s painting made me think of flowers and butterflies. And when I saw the photo of Martha Graham dancing in the Times, I felt immediately that she must be holding the moon.
Summer solstice this year coincides with a solar eclipse of the new moon. Magic is afoot!

The moon shines dark—there’s something ominous about that, for us at least. I admire oxymoron’s and this is a good one.
Another instance of seeing an image suggested by the words rather than what’s actually there, the woman (Martha Graham) because of the words ‘strike’ and ‘afoot’ I assumed was a footballer….

She founded an iconic dance company. They are currently trying to reconstruct some of her dances from photos–they were never filmed.
Dancing is not so different from many sports.

I’ve heard the name, but don’t know anything about dance. You’re right though, it’s certainly athletic.
