October 2022
like a sudden flash,
green turns into fire that falls–
autumn paths open
like a sudden flash–
unexpected, unmasking
the retreating past
green turns into fire that falls,
exposing the skeletons
underneath the veil
autumn paths open–
the earth folds into itself–
dusk-faded, shadowed
Lisa, at Tao Talk, reminded me of the troiku form, which I’ve borrowed from her to use also for Colleen’s #TankaTuesday prompt, where the theme is lightning, suggested by Sangeetha.
It does finally feel like autumn here. Not much color yet, but it’s coming. We’ve had a wet day with the remnants of Hurricane Ian, and the building turned on the heat for the first time this morning.
Happy October!

“fire that falls” such a fitting phrase for it. I worked out in the yard today and also drove to an appointment and fire is definitely getting primed to fall. Thanks for the nod, Kerfe, wonderful troiku.

I would not thought of it without Sangeetha’s prompt. And thanks for reminding me about the troiku.

Green turns to fire is so perfect for this time of year. I love your autumnal collages, too.

A striking combo, Kerfe. It’s not like that here. Autumn is gradual and tortuous.

Thanks Robbie. Summer always seems to linger, and then suddenly it’s fall. And I’m always surprised!

What a lovely description of fall (called autumn over here in Oz). Just as you are putting on the heating we are beginning to warm up here and the deciduous trees are turning green.

Thanks Suzanne. We are all tied to our seasons, whichever they may be.

Kerfe, I love this troika form too. That last stanza really sums up fall for me: “the earth folds into itself–dusk-faded, shadowed.” It makes me think of the “autumn of our years…” it’s that same sentimentally. 🎃

Thanks Colleen. I like the last stanza best too. This form is an interesting way to enlarge a distilled thought.

I agree. I like that it doesn’t have the rules of the haiku either. Sometimes they are limiting… I know.

Kerfe, you really made these prompts sing – I also want to try this form – and I saw it on Lisa’s blog too 🙂
