Waterfall Mansion (Thursday Doors)

the doors
are silent, locked–
I inspect the inside
through the gated leafholes–
no waterfalls
are found

The doors to this building immediately attracted my attention as I walked across East 80th Street on my way to an appointment–besides the beauty of the ironwork, there was a door guardian. The plaque said it was an art gallery, and a peek through the gate confirmed that is was true. I took photos and went on my way.

My later research revealed The Waterfall Mansion’s rich history–it was the former home and studio of celebrity textile designers Leslie and DD Tillet. Originally purchased as an investment, realtor Kate Shin worked with architect Toshiko Mori to reimagine the space into a combined residence and gallery. She requested an interior waterfall, as the houses she grew up in, in Korea, all contained them. Thus the name Waterfall Mansion.

In the end, Shin decided to become a gallery owner and art dealer herself, and to keep the building, where she has created a community of artists and their work from all over the world. You can read more about the gallery on its website, here. And read more about the Tillets here.

I’ve written a badger’s hexastitch (thanks for the reminder Colleen!) for Tanka Tuesday with synonyms for quiet and seek.

And as always look for more doors at Thursday Doors, hosted by Dan Antion.

While no waterfalls were found, the photos have a watery affect with shimmering reflections. And the poem floes beautifully!

Your poem is beautiful, Kerfe and I love the photos. I appreciate the history. I could imagine falling in love with a building and wanting to keep it. (I can’t imaging being able to buy it, but that’s another story). I like the picture through the grill.

Love your poem Kerfe a perfect waterfall of words nicely penned. The doors are intricate and seems to offset/juxtapose the rest of the façade well. Great sharing!

Some buildings seem to be full of angst and project it inside and out. This one is the opposite to me. It’s serene. And it and its occupants seem to know who they are. And doing good things. And… I love the doors.

I think this is one of the more elegantly compelling buildings I’ve seen through your photographic and poetic lens. I can vividly imagine what isn’t there. I want to explore Korean architecture a bit now too. What a place to live in, where an interior waterfall is de rigeur…

What a lovely post, Kerfe. Thanks for looking up and sharing the fascinating history of this place. The name “Waterfall Mansion” is so evocative. I can’t imagine living in or growing up in a house with an interior waterfall — let alone more than one. Hugs.

Lots of art crammed into that space. I really like the net-like sculptures. The outside area is quite lovely. With the Tilletts I bought my daughter in-law a hand-made purse with a mum design like that once. It’s beautiful and iconic.
