Stayin’ Alive (Thursday Doors on Friday)
Sometimes nowhere is the only place
you have to go. Your feet, lacking wings,
keep you earthbound. But then music
appears from nowhere and occupies all the space
in your mind–music that moves your feet to sing,
tracing patterns that confirm you’re alive–
consumed completely by the melody, the rhythm of music
that needs nowhere and nothing but your feet to arrive.
I was looking for the Brigid door I featured last week in order to get a photo with the entire face on the left. So I was just walking around my neighborhood–the sun was out!–best to take advantage of it. I did find the door (see photo at end of post), but down the block there were more interesting buildings, and these birds caught my eye immediately.
The house itself seemed to be under construction, so the doorway was boarded over. But the beautiful details of the facade were readily observable.
Lots of guardians–I always like that.
A little research showed that there was an attempt about 10 years ago to both sell and rent the house, and that it last sold for 9,5 million in 2018. If you want to see what the lavish interiors looked like in 2015, when the asking rent was $30,000/month, you can see them here. At the moment it’s being “modernized” by a developer called Holliswood–as you can’t landmark interiors, I shudder to think what that means. But at least they evidently intend to market it as a single residence instead of breaking it up into tiny apartments.
Here’s the Brigid door with all its guardians.
And the poem? It’s a san san for my W3 prompt, which asked the participants to pick either a song about dancing, or a song they like to dance to for inspiration. Its only relation to the doors is the fact that often when I walk around looking for doors there’s a song stuck in my head, and I find my feet taking on the rhythm of the music. The song I picked was one I recently heard and it’s been earwormed in my head ever since.
If you have time, do watch the video for a time capsule of both clothing and dance moves. And of course, it’s still a great song. And perfect for dancing.
And there are always more doors to find at Thursday Doors, hosted by Dan Antion.

Stunning architecture again, Kerfe. I love the guardians! Your poem reminds me how fun it is to hear an old song. The next thing you know, you want to dance. Music is an immediate mood booster.

Wow what a gem of an apartment. Love the “squared” paneling and the patio. Unusual looking kitchen all dark wood, but the window with the view, awesome. Maybe in my next life I could afford it. The exteriors are always enjoyable to see. I’m glad at least they are protected.
About your poem, I was just reading something about how music is the cure for so much of the human b.s. being visited upon the plant. Oh yes, it was an essay by Ted Gioia (sp?)

I know! I love that little patio as well. I have a dream apartment that has huge windows and an outdoor space (among other things). It’s fun to look and imagine.
I think that’s true about music. When my mother was many years into Alzheimer’s and did not talk at all, she would still respond to music.
Thanks Jade.

I hope the developers will keep this beauty, and never break it up. Excellent find, Kerfe!

An engaging and delightful San san. And thank you for this great prompt.
I can imagine the interiors of this place, the doors are stylish and ornate stately yet not overdone…a refined elegance everywhere, Love your photos, your perspectives are always spot on to get the best angle. I enjoyed your share. Thank you, Kerfe,

I love your poem and the photos, Kerfe. I passed on the video. The interior of that building was magnificent. I guess if they keep it together and don’t destroy too many of the details, that’s all we can hope for. Thanks for sharing the Brigid door and its guardians

You can never tell with developers, but if they hope to make money on it, I imagine keeping some of those interior details would help. Thanks Dan.

What a fantastic facade, such a cool building. And now I know how you walk around these neighborhoods- strutting like John Travolta! I did watch the video and realize I never did see the movie, though I remember reading the book believe it or not. I was twelve. Maybe that’s why I didn’t see the movie.

Thanks D. I’m sure no one would mistake me for John Travolta, but so many people walk along listening to music on their headphones, there’s no shortage of rhythmic walkers around. I can’t remember if they had movie ratings in those days, but I imagine if they did Saturday Night Fever would not have been considered appropriate for younger teenagers.

I love disco music and have many happy memories of dancing the night away in the 1970’s. This building reminds me of many we have in Philadelphia. Such beauty.

Thanks Claudia. I love this music too, but I’m surprised how many people still retain their strong dislike for it.

Those doors are all so beautiful. What wonderful finds, Kerfe. And I enjoyed your poem, singing and dancing, listening and flying with your feet. I can picture it as you wander the streets photographing doors.

Thanks Diana. It surprising how many people have music in their walks. But maybe not. Music is a good companion.

This feels so timely today, after I spent the morning with my mom making potstickers for a Lunar New Year party tomorrow (our first without my dad) and I played an album for her that got her dancing in the kitchen. Joy, like grief, can come so unexpectedly, and you really captured that magic. Also, those lively birds! What a great companion piece to your Bengal Floricans. May they all be preserved.

Thanks Sun. We definitely need more preservation for many things. And dancing! I hope to get my Lunar New Year post up later today. Enjoy your potstickers!

oh, Kerfe… I really, really, really like how you’ve portrayed how the power of music can transport us to a place of vitality within the confines of life. It’s done so throughout all of human history, I suppose…
Sincerely,
David
