Blues (Thursday Doors)

“There is something about the summer / That makes me moody”
 – “Summer Mood,”  Best Coast

the relentless summer heat
leaves me without context–
loose ends everywhere–
the days have lost all form–
filled with disembodied blues

This oppressive summer heat-and-humidity indeed makes me moody and unfocused, even blue, so this week I decided to look through my archives for some blue doors. There were quite a few doors without context that were blue. I have no idea where the above doors are located, and I did not even photograph the whole building they reside in, but at least I noticed the stair guardian on the door with the blue stairs. I’m sure the stairs were what first attracted my attention.

I think I may have used this door before in a post, but I don’t know where it lives.

I remember that this door is on the east side, near the Cooper Hewitt. I need to go back and find out more about it. It looks like it might be a school building.

I know exactly where this door is, and I don’t know why I never photographed the building and looked for its history. It’s a handsome entrance I think.

Here’s another door that’s only 15 blocks away from me. I keep meaning to go back and photo the whole church.

This belongs to a school that seems to be in use even though it has also been under construction scaffolding for years. I think that not only people in wheelchairs need to go to the entrance to the right.

Colleen asked us to write a summer poem inspired by one of the song lyrics she provided for this week’s Tanka Tuesday. I chose the Best Coast song for my gogyohka

And Dan Antion hosts many more doors every week at Thursday Doors.

I’m taking next week off to finish my POPO postcards. For all who celebrate, Happy 4th!

I do like those blue doors. Well, you know how much I love blue.

Apparently, seasonal affective disorder also refers to summer. If we didn’t have a/c, I’d be miserable and not able to sleep. But on some of the hot, humid days, I haven’t gone out, and then that makes me feel feel antsy.

Thanks Merril. The blue doors stand out for me, and always look welcoming.

That makes sense that summer weather affects our well-being the same way winter weather does. I dislike running the air conditioning all the time–I really like my windows open–and today I was able to turn it off, thank goodness. I think it’s part of my claustrophobia. Which heat is as well. There were a couple days I didn’t go out, but I get the same way. so usually I at least go and run some kind of errand.

You’re welcome, Kerfe. You’re right, they do look welcoming. I know blue is a “cool” color, but they feel warm to me, if that makes sense.

Yes, I can understand that about the air. I couldn’t stand the room air conditioners. I don’t feel as closed in with the central a/c, but it’s not really efficient to turn it on and off in our old, drafty house.

Thanks David. The weather seems to affect me much more these days–not sure if it’s age, climate change, or a combination. But today was lovely, after last night’s thunderstorms.

The oppressive heat can certainly make a person blue, especially when we think of the things we could be doing if it weren’t so gross outside. You captured that feeling well in your poem, and I love blue doors, so it’s a win-win post for me.

I love your gogyohka and how nicely you connect “the blues” Sorry about the heat. It can be an energy funnel. I like all your doors, the one at #328, perhaps its the lights you captured, but it seems mysterious in a New Age type vibe.
Happy 4th celebrations! Enjoy your week, Kerfe.

I’m not a fan of hot, muggy summer heat … so your collection of blue doors and the song resonate with me. Hope all is well.

Those blue doors are so unexpected — at least to me — that they would seem to insist I snap out of the heat stupor. Easier said than done, however. I very much agree about the heat and humidity, which has been most unwelcome here too. I’m mulling over the part about being left “without context.” What an intriguing way to describe the intensity of this weather. As always, crafted beautifully.

Thanks Maureen. Any door with color gets my attention right away. These photos are all from my archives, taken during less intense weather. It’s hard to go too far out and about in the heat.

Disembodied blue is an apt description of the heat dome we’ve been under. Have fun finishing up your POPO cards. I got some supplies and some postcards but haven’t gotten started yet.

A nice selection of doors! I like how you use their blue shade as a metaphor for how you are feeling right now, but I actually find the blue color to be quite calming 😊 I’ve always found blue to be that way…

Thanks Teagan. I was off WP last week, but will start working my way back in. It was a needed break!

Now we have humidity which may even be worse. But the doors are always there to find.

I’m lucky to live where the temps are mild, Kerfe, (except for the next few days). I can’t imagine trying to function in the tremendous heat that’s baking so much of the country/world. It would make me blue too. Great pics though, and some of the doors are quite unique. 🙂

Thanks Diana. Now we have less heat and more humidity which may even be more unbearable. We are paying for our refusal to face the consequences of our acts.

But the doors are always a joy to discover.
