Johnny the Cat (Thursday Doors)
In The Pet Market lives Johnny the Cat—
he dines well—some might call him fat.
A king on his throne,
he is always at home–
and allows the occasional pat.
This post was inspired by David’s W3 prompt this week to write about something amusing. I’m always delighted to see Johnny the Cat when I’m in my old neighborhood, and these pictures were taken at various times over the last few years. He’s not really fat, but he’s certainly treated royally, and is a neighborhood institution.
He keeps an eye on things…
from many angles.
New York is famous for its bodega cats, but Johnny has a life most deli cats would envy.
You can always find more doors at Thursday Doors, hosted by Dan Antion.
And in honor of Johnny, some music from Chuck Berry that is sure to make you smile (and dance–although perhaps in a bit less of a frenzied manner).

Aww–he looks so sweet! This post made me happy.

Lucky Johnny! Around here many of the hardware stores have a cat in residence. It’s always fun to find them perched here and there receiving pats from patrons. Cats are great at taming people.

They are! Lots of stores have cats in the city. It always makes me smile. Thanks D.

Love your poem. I’m reminded of the library cat I met at Chestnut Hill college some years back. A happy post!

Such a delightful limerick for Johnny and he is such a cutie. Thanks for the link to Bodega cats. I learnt something new.
Love the Chuck Berry song.

Oh this was so fun and well done Kerfe. I love all the excellent charm in your poem. As well as the cat’s (Johnny) photos and the door angles. Johnny is lovely and chill cat. Thanks for the rousing music too…a delight to hear that song.. Haha I am dating myself there…Lol!

I never turn down an opportunity to hear a Chuck Berry song! (No frenetic dancing, though. I might break a hip.) I see that Johnny the Cat has his own Instagram account. He is one cool cat!

He is! Yes my own dancing is a bit more subdued. Thanks Liz.

A great post and poem, Kerfe. I’m not much of a person for writing humour but I’ll try.

He has an expression napping that I feel like I’ve seen in Ukiyo-e prints… That is the life indeed. A star of borough and internet without lifting a single paw! Go Johnny Go (at Johnny’s own pace.)

Thanks Sun. Exactly my sentiment. Being allergic, it’s good to have plenty of vicarious cat company.

I always think I want a cat until I remember they need a litter box and you have to feed them! Lol, I don’t want anymore responsibility.

So nice to see a cat enjoying the limelight! We had a clinic cat who was one chill fellow – loved all dogs and most cats but was often snubbed by the pets coming in but the owners made up for it!!

Thanks Muri. I agree. A clinic cat is a great idea.

Bodega cats? Seriously? That’s hilarious. I knew a bookstore cat once, but that’s my whole experience with cats in retail. I think Johnny must have been an emperor in a previous life — he has that look. I loved the poem, of course! Thanks for the light-hearted moment!

When we were in Budapest a couple months ago, we visited the local cate café – that was super fun! And I’m not much a cat-person, but I still really enjoyed it! 😻

There are a few cat cafes here, but I think in Brooklyn. I’ve heard it’s fun–might be too much for my allergies though.

Wonderful how cats make themselves look so at home amongst us, isn’t it? Sounds at home in that limerick, too!
