Castles in the Air (Thursday Doors on Friday)
The fields are full of dreams–
failures left far behind
as pitchers’ arms unwind–
Spring comes to Queens.
I was looking for something else and came across these two photos from Citi Field, the Mets’ Stadium in Queens. They were taken last April, at the beginning of the season when anything seemed possible. And it was, despite an extremely slow beginning. Who knew they would make it to the National League Championship series ?
(OK they lost, but still…)
The Dodgers broke the hearts of every New York baseball fan in 2024. But every spring begins a new chance for redemption.
I was there on Pride Night last summer when Jose Iglesias debuted his song OMG which became the anthem for the Mets comeback during the rest of the season. So they didn’t get to the World Series…they made it exciting, and entertaining, right to the end.
Hope springs eternal once again as spring training begins. Even for a Pirates fan, right Dan?
My poem is an abhanga, the form suggested by Robbie this week at her Spin The Bottle prompt. For its theme, I used Svenja’s prompt at W3 to write a poem encouraging someone not to give up. I’m pretty sure this is not exactly what she had in mind, but: Let’s Go Mets!
As always, you can find more doors at Thursday Doors, hosted by Dan Antion.

Kerfe, I love how your drawings capture the spirit of baseball players—they feel so alive! Your abhanga has that same hopeful energy 🙂
Much love,
David

Thanks David. There’s a lot of similarity between dancers and athletes in the beauty of the way they use their bodies. As to hope…you can’t like or participate in sports without learning to deal with failure and disappointment. I saw what a great lesson it was for a child during my daughter’s softball-playing days. Also good for learning to work together with a group of other often dissimilar people towards a goal.

Thank you for participating!
Quiet a unique take of the prompt guidelines! 😄
I love this part best: “The fields are full of dreams–failures left far behind”

Thanks. Learning to live with failure and begin again with hope applies to many things in life, not just sports.

Thanks Ashley. I like to draw bodies in motion, though I’m not always successful.

I love them and you’ve used colour as well, which adds energy; you’ve certainly captured movement. A very very long time ago, I drew our black cat chasing its tail. I used charcoal which enabled me to sketch quickly but have not drawn like that since I was 18. Your posts are always so energising. 🤗😊

Thank you! These are mostly old drawings too. It’s hard these days to focus on anything. That’s why I like the Kick-About prompts; they at least point in a possible direction.

The new prompt is difficult though!

I’ve been trying out some iridescent pencils I have but I have to admit they don’t look that iridescent. I have some iridescent paint as well, so that’s the next step.

I’m off to a big craft shop tomorrow to see if there’s anything I can use from there. 🤞🤞

Fun! I don’t watch sports on the TV, but I do like to go to a game now and then. Being in the atmosphere is so much more fun!

It is, no doubt about it. I don’t watch TV but I like to listen on the radio when I can’t get to the game. Thanks Melanie!

Gorgeous art and the movement is perfectly captured! The poem is very fitting as well. As a Cubs fan I’m used to disappointment…

Love the action-art. When I came to the US, basketball replaced cricket, I couldn’t get into baseball at all…but supporting your team is a whole emotion, across sports! Must check out this form too…abhanga! Thanks!

Thanks Rajani. There are so many different sports we can always find a team somewhere–and yes, the emotion is the same.

I’m not even a baseball fan and I got all excited reading (and listening) to this post, Kerfe. Great poem, beautiful drawings, and what a song. The anticipation is palpable. Can’t wait for spring!

Thanks Diana. That was a fun night. Baseball is something to share with my daughters–when my nephew lived in NYC he used to go to games with us too. You always know spring is on the way when pitchers and catchers report.

🙂 I was a women’s basketball (Huskies) fan when I lived in CT. There’s nothing quite like the excitement of being there. 🙂

Thanks for sharing that, Kerfe. We’ve lived on the West Coast for 14 years now, but still have a soft spot for the team. I got to meet them all at a fundraiser (back in the Rebecca Lobo days) and they were amazing people. I’m glad to see that their kindness as a team continues.

Hope does spring eternal, Kerfe. I apologize for the late reply. In addition to all my other problems with WordPress, I don’t appear to be getting notifications from your place 😦
Our daughter and I are going to be in Pittsburgh for their home opening series against the Yankees. In all the years of baseball, the Pirates and the Yankees have never met in a home opener in Pittsburgh. It’s not why we’re going, but we have to go to a game while we’re there. I love your poem, and the spirit of baseball.
Looks like the Mets are set to do well. I wish we had an owner willing to spend some money.

That’s exciting! My younger daughter already got us Yankees tickets in April when the DBacks are in town (that’s her team–her sister is the Yankee fan). The Pirates have Skenes, that’s a hope for the future. I have to admit I only know a few of their other players. It does seem like the pockets for good players are getting deeper and deeper. And let’s face it, the Dodgers are the team to beat for both leagues.
I’m not sure what to think of the Mets’ chances. What got them going last year was the chemistry of Iglesias. And unless Senga is back to form, they don’t really have a #l starter. But you never know.
Anyway, looking forward to it…

I’m guessing Skenes will pitch on Friday. We’re going on Sunday but it will be fun just being in the park.

I’m hoping the Pirates can have a winning season. Not asking for much. I think the Mets can make a run. It would be nice to see some new faces in the discussion. After last year, I think they have to take them seriously.

Wow! I was not expecting a baseball post! If ever there was a sport that exemplified perseverace, it’s baseball. Heartbreak one at-bat, inning, game, season. Victory the next.
I grew up on the Boston Red Sox. Enough said.
Excellent poem.
(btw — I live in Cooperstown, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, so I see it/read it/hear it all the time!)

Thanks Sally. I hope to get to Cooperstown some day…but since I don’t drive, it probably won’t happen. It must be exciting when all the players are in town for the Hall of Fame ceremony.

Yes–starting with the Indians (now Guardians) in Cleveland as a child, through the Orioles years in Baltimore and now the Mets since I moved to New York. My younger daughter also played Little League and high school softball, which was a great experience too.

Good times for the true fan. My daughter became a Yankees fan when her father took her to a game that turned out to be David Wells’ perfect game when she was 12. She’s been there for the bad times too. We have a (mostly) friendly rivalry. Except for that subway series…

What a time to see a game! You can’t beat that. In 1977 I started to follow the Dodgers *(Reggie Jackson is still an enemy lol)…I didn’t see them until the 90s in Atlanta (I live in TN) and Nomo pitched and I saw a triple play so that was good…but not perfect game good.
Oh yea…I remember the subway series…Piazza and Clemens is what I remember the most. I was rooting for the Mets.

A triple play is pretty special.
Yes, Roger Clemens is not on my good list. He also thew at Piazza’s head.
