Limitations (Thursday Doors Writing Challenge)
Sometimes I lie on the floor and consider what I would see if I walked instead on the ceiling. So much more below me than above—where would my head be then? Not in the clouds–or would the sky, too, be forced underground, the earth heavy, pushing on my feet—but what about gravity? Where would it be located? How would it work? The possibilities seem too complex to even contemplate, let alone understand. Perhaps if my apartment turned upside down I would lose all materiality. I would become merely a concept, weightless, waiting to be defined.
beside themselves–how do
thoughts squeeze into spaces too small
to fit comfortably?

I was inspired by the photo provided by Maureen for the Thursday Doors Writing Challenge, to consider how we fit into the spaces in our lives. I do actually imagine myself walking on the ceiling when I’m lying on the floor looking up. And my mind follows its own paths through the rabbit hole from there.
The Thursday Doors Writing Challenge is open for the entire month of May, hosted by Dan Antion. Anyone can join in–you can see all the doors available to inspire you here.

Hi Kerfe, I really enjoyed your interpretation of the picture prompt.

Oh perfect! And not just one thought, they’re all crammed one on top of another sometimes in that tiny space!!!

Very interesting! 😀 I agree, I see creatures walking upside down on the ceiling, and I imagine the world must be so different from there.

Thanks–it’s always good to consider other points of view I find. And to consider how other creatures view the world.

This is great, Kerfe. We had a little cat (~5 lbs) who used to climb to the top of a tall scratching post and lay on her back with her head hanging off. She viewed the room upside down and I often wondered what she thought about that. Maybe she shared your thoughts and questions. Walking on the ceiling would be good if everything else stayed on the floor/ground. Although, given how often I bank my feet and ankles into stuff, I wonder if that would be my head 😉
Good job working with Maureen’s photo.

Thanks Dan. I too am always bumping into stuff–I hadn’t considered that angle. I’d have to keep my eyes open.
I can see a cat considering how to walk on the ceiling…

This all came together so well – the writing, the door, then the Paul Simon song – and imagining one man’s ceiling is another man’s floor – and another way to consider the ceiling of another man is that someone’s highest point could be the starting point for another. Your writing was edited to lead us to imagine with you and still thinking about what it could be like to “lose all materiality.”

Thanks–when I saw the photo I immediately thought of Paul Simon which made me think about my floor and ceiling ruminations. Our trains of thought can take us many different places.

Limitations or limitless? I can’t help wondering. Maybe, when we turn ourselves upside-down with our imaginations, we are preparing ourselves to cope with the times when our lives are turned upside-down. Maybe there are more possibilities. If we lose materiality, will we squeeze in with all those thoughts? Important musings. Thank you!

Thanks Maureen. I think you are right about preparing ourselves for upheaval. It’s always good to keep our minds ready to consider other points of view. (K)

Very imaginative. I think I would like to walk on the ceiling and maybe even “dancing on the ceiling!”
