Directions (Thursday Doors Writing Challenge)
It’s no use he said. I can’t tell you where you need to go. That place is somewhere deep inside of you. Only you know where it can be found.
Stop hiding from it. Open those doors instead of just pounding pounding pounding as if they were locked.
windows reflect sun
light—guardians flank threshold–
your life says come in
Of course I was immediately attracted to the guardians of Darlene’s door. But the sign was also intriguing. How many times do we create barriers for ourselves that don’t in fact exist?
The Thursday Doors Writing Challenge, hosted by Dan Antion, is open for a few more days, until May 31. Anyone can join in–you can see all the doors available to inspire you here.

I love that question. It aligns with a post I’ve been working on about my experience learning piano. At some point I must have made a sign for my future self that contradicted all the misleading warnings and prohibitions I’d constructed along the way.

I’ve just read your post, and I see the connection. We so (too) often get in our own way.

I love this post, Kerfe. Your question is a good one. There are so many barriers that we put up, and for no good reason. It’s question we should ask often.
I love that song, too. I haven’t heard Judy Collins for a long time.

Thanks Dan. We are often our own worst enemies.

love the poem/flash fiction that you wrote for the photo. You’re so right that we often create barriers for ourselves. That song is haunting (though I know the Fairport Convention version and not the Judy Collins one).

Thanks Teresa. I only know this version (Judy wrote it) so I’ll have to check out Fairport Convention’s.

Life says come in… so true…most of the time, I’m the one holding back…it’s even worse when I recognize it and still don’t enter…. sigh!

Thanks Rajani. I think we all can recognize ourselves here.

Such a beautiful presentation. I felt like that prose in the beginning was meant just for me. Thank you.

Thanks Violet. I think we all can identify with it to some degree.

You’re so right. We often make our own barriers instead of opening the door.
The Judy Collins performance is perfect–of course.

Your question looms huge: how many times do we create barriers for ourselves? Endless times, I fear. Someone — I think a writing instructor — said “get out of your own way.” Painful to hear, but I think writers especially need to hear that. A good doors lesson!

Thanks Maureen. I’ve very good at getting in my own way. It’s always a relief when I figure it out.

I love your take on my door photo. I thought the sign was relevant. How often have I pulled when I should have pushed! Life is all about making decisions and living with the consequences. Thanks for Judy Collins. One of my favourites. (also a Prairie girl). Thanks for using my photo.

Thank you for the photo! Too often we don’t pay attentions to the signs around us…
