“The Door Is Always Open” (Thursday Doors)
Where shall we go this evening?
Side by side adventuring
lost in a world of words
Stumbling over and over
through a mysterious landscape
in a sea of happiness
Who are these strange creatures?
Dreaming their way through winter
awakening with the spring
Bound collectively
by the love of family
and the loyalty of friends
I’m not sure what got us on the subject of Moomintroll, but I remarked to my younger daughter that there was an exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library called Tove Jansson and The Moomins: The Door Is Always Open. She said “Let’s go!” and we did.
There were lots of interactive displays, including the house at the top, and these books with doors and information about the Moomins and their stories and creation inside.
The exhibit also included copies of the Moomin books in many languages, other adult books that Tove Jansson wrote, her art, and some of the toys, games, animations, shows, and other offshoots of the original stories and books. Jansson lived a full and self-directed artistic life; her “door was always open.”
I had never been to the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, although my daughter went there often in high school. You can apply for a card if you live in one of the other boroughs, and she had gotten one. The outside was under scaffolding, but the entrance on the inside is quite grand.
And here’s the entrance to the atrium where part of the exhibit was from the inside. It’s a beautiful bright space.
My poem is for Punam’s prompt at dVerse, to write about happiness. Nothing made me happier than to read aloud to my children. And the Moomintroll books were delightful in every way. If you don’t know them, and want to know more about them, their website is here. Speaking from experience, they are equally enjoyable for adults and children.
And, as always, look for more doors at Thursday Doors, hosted by Dan Antion.
I’ll have to calm down a bit, or else I’ll burst with happiness.
–Moomintroll

I’ve never read the Moomintroll books but that exhibit is fantastic!

‘Burst(ing) with happiness’ is a good feeling and your verse did just that! I had never heard/read about moomins and I am so glad you shared the link.
Reading to my kids also gave me a lot of joy. Even though my son had not started reading at the age of three, he knew exactly what was written on each page of his favourite book! Thank you, Kerfe, for bringing back those happy memories. 😊

Thanks Punam. We actually still read aloud to each other sometimes. It’s a treat even for adults to be read to.

What a wonderfully fun exhibit, Kerfe. I love the photos, and your poem reminds me of the kind of adventures kids can dream about when we read to them when they are little.

Great poem, Kerfe. Your verses’ expressions of joy and whimsy are infectious. The bespoke idea of “dreaming through winter” is tempting! I love it.
Thanks for the introduction to The Moomins, new to me. Great art pieces and the interactive invitation to connect with art in an immersive way has great appeal. Love the doors, the grand entrance, and that spectacular eagle above. Wow!
Wonderful share. Thank you.

Oh I loved your poem and this wonderful fun exhibit. How much fun to discover this magical exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library called Tove Jansson and The Moomins. Would a 2 year old like this? We’re coming with the baby early Novemeber, I love “the Door is always Open”. 💓

Thanks Cindy. The books are for older children, although who knows? They may have made some versions for younger ones.

I thought those huge windows of the entrance looked familiar. I was only in the Brooklyn Public Library once, but I’ve photographed the entrance from the outside many times. Loved your poem, Kerfe.

For my mom and I, living only blocks away in the 70s-80s, the central branch of the Madison public library was our second home, so if something like this were to come up here today, we’d be so excited! The Moomins never seemed to catch on here in the Midwest but NYPL did a fabulous job with the exhibition, and clearly knew how to exploit the magical connection between books and doors! That last one is particularly arresting.

Thanks Sun. From the comments, it seems the Moomins were a NYC thing. My mother was a school librarian so the library was like a second home to us as well. I never owned a lot of books as a child, but I was always at the library. (and still am…)

I’ve never heard of Moomins. Perhaps I’m too old? Lol. I love the doors that lead into books. How fun if all books had doors and we could walk right in. A fun exhibit, Kerfe. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Diana. Maybe they were a NYC thing? I did not read them as a child, but enjoyed reading them to my children as an adult. It was definitely a fun exhibit.

I had to go to the website, of course, because I’d never heard of the Moomins! My loss! Everything in your photos is charming and fun and I think I can see how such reading aloud would make a mom very happy.
I very much liked the beginning with a question, especially one that asks “where shall we go?” Into a book or into a gorgeous library would be ideal answers!

Thanks Jade. It’s quite an imposing structure, even with scaffolding and fences all around during renovations. When they are finished, I’ll go back and take proper photos of the exterior.
And yes, everyone should know about the Moomins.

I enjoyed the post and how fun to have an exhibit with doors for someone who joins in the Thursday Doors (so perfect) – and this exhibit, the Tove Jansson and The Moomins: The Door Is Always Open, seems like it was so charming!

I’ve read the summer book, but not the winter one. I’ll have to look for it. The Moomins are a treasure.
