Mary

mary 1

Oh Mary, she moves behind me
She leaves her fingerprints everywhere
Every time the snow drifts, every way the sand shifts
Even when the night lifts, she’s always there
–Patty Griffin

I’ve had an idea for awhile to draw all the Marys I can find in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Like Buddha, she has inspired a lot of great and moving art.

mary 2

Mary belongs to a long tradition of the Great Mother that includes Mother Earth:  she nurtures, protects, and heals.  Her appeal is universal, and not confined to Christianity.

You can read all the lyrics to Patty Griffin’s wonderful song, and link to hear her singing it, here:  http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/patty+griffin/mary_20105316.html

mary 3

Oh Mary, you’re covered in roses, you’re covered in ruins
You’re covered in secrets
You’re covered in treetops, covered in birds
Who can sing a million songs without any words

I also want to do something with that vivid image someday.

Invisible Eve 19

lisha drawing 4s

Lisha

They keep my future:
I am moving towards a door
that is opening

I’ve been working on Lisha and her family for weeks.  I have a real problem with groups of people, getting the proportions of each figure and their relationships to each other right.  And then, to add attempting a facial resemblance…I did many drawings (and even a painted drawing) in many media.  Above is the last drawing I made.  It’s the best rendering of Lisha herself, but not of the children, and the daughter on the right is way too small.

lisha drawing 2s

I can’t keep you safe
but I can make a place for
gathering with love

Above is my second attempt.  Lisha is again the best resemblance, but the figure proportions are again off.

lisha pen and ink s

Don’t say yes when no
is the answer.  Say yes to
what you believe.

The proportional relationships on the pen and ink aren’t bad, but the resemblance isn’t there at all.

lisha paint bs

We stand together:
four smiles, crossing boundaries,
time turning towards hope.

I got the son in this one, but Lisha not all all.  And the proportions are still off.

Tequihby at One Stumble at a Time (https://onestumbleatatime.wordpress.com/) has been working on some faces, and one in particular, to get the resemblance she desires.  And she’s seeing improvement with each new sketch.  I just can’t tell if I made any progress…(these are the best; many more drawings were discarded).

I think I’ll give this one a break.

But one thing I can say after all those drawings:  I feel a strong bond in this family, and I have hope for their futures.

Jan

jan s

My body will no
longer take me home.  Eyes search
hopeful:  family.

Jan Kwiatkowski’s photo and story touched me.  Paralyzed by an apparent hit-and-run last September (he does not remember the accident and there are no witnesses), the immigrant hopes to go back to Ostroleka, Poland, to family and home.

Dr. Arthur Winer, a medical resident at Bellevue Hospital, has started a fund drive to raise the money needed for Jan to return to Poland and to pay for his care there.

I found an old drawing (above, left).  Not labeled.  Questlove?  So I did new, serious, Questlove (above, right).  Yes, I think it’s him.

Invisible Eve 17

valerie 2s

Valerie

Time.  It expands, fills,
and then retreats and chokes.  Where
are those minutes now?

valerie 1s

Once I smiled.  The lines
are in my face.  Time turns like
grey hairs.  Minutes.  Years.

I’m finding it useful to do more than one version of these faces.  When I draw the surface, somehow something underneath jumps out at me, and it’s not always the same thing.  A reminder not just for a portrait, but for seeing people in general:  there’s a lot you miss, especially if you are not really paying close attention.

Spotted Woman

spotted woman close up s

I tried to paint on some paper I had that turned out to have a non-porous surface…since it wouldn’t absorb the paint, I took rice paper and made a monoprint.  Black eyes! among other things.  So I used pen and ink and oil crayons to add details.

spotted woman s

Yes, I’m still working on cat paintings, and this is the leftover paint from the jaguar, hence the catwoman feel.  I like the slightly out-of-control effect of monoprints.  I’m sure there will be more, maybe with a bit more actual intent to start with.
