Eagle Owl (draw a bird day)

silent flight

The eagle owl is both one of the largest and longest-lived owls. With wing spans up to 6 feet, it has no natural predators, although it is sometimes mobbed by crows. The leading causes of death– electrocution, hunting, and poisoning–are man-made.

Nesting on cliffs or rocky outcrops, it has a wide distribution throughout Europe and Asia. I love its binomial name–Bubo Bubo.

Eagle owls are solitary, territorial, and nocturnal. They can more often be heard, having a large number of vocalizations, than seen.

Draw a Bird Day: Short-eared Owl

I did a few of these brush-painted flying owls and all of them looked very fishlike to me.  I usually think of owls as catlike, but in air they swim.  Short-eared owls in flight are described as “moth-like”.

Short-eared owls have wide distribution, occurring on all continents except Australia and Antarctica.  The map I saw for North America showed wide declines in coastal populations due to loss of habitat, although those in the center of the United States and Canada seemed stable.

They eat mainly rodents, and are in turn food for raptors and larger mammals because they nest on the ground.  Most active from dusk through dawn, they fly low over fields looking for prey.

Also for Colleen’s #TankaTuesday poet’s choice of words.  It’s becoming a regular for Draw-a-Bird Day.

Once again, Draw a Bird Day, the 8th of each month, is serving as a placeholder here at MeMadTwo while Nina takes an extended break.  I’m missing her, aren’t you?

Draw-a-Bird Day: Barn Owl

A mirror cinquain for Colleen’s #tanka Tuesday, poet’s choice of words.

I love the faces of owls.  The barn owl can look quite ghostly, especially at night, and yet there are also many colors reflected in the feathers.  Barn owls are found almost everywhere in the world.

The Owl can be the familiar to Athena’s wisdom or to Lilith as goddess of Death.  Or both at the same time, perhaps.

Economics (Draw a Bird Day)

Biodiversity is unprofitable. Industry is profitable.

Old growth forests are unprofitable. Deforestation is profitable.  Prairies are unprofitable.  Pipelines are profitable.  Clean water and air are unprofitable.  Manufacturing, drilling, and mining are profitable.  Public lands are unprofitable.  Private property is profitable.

Healthcare is unprofitable. Illness is profitable. Truth is unprofitable. Lies are profitable.

Extinction is profitable.

The spotted owl is one of the species that will likely lose habitat if the Endangered Species Act is gutted, as those pushing development over preservation, supported by many members of Congress, and the President and his cabinet members, wish to do.  We have to find a way to live that doesn’t have greed and profit as its prime motives.  We are not just destroying the individual ecosystems that are homes for endangered species; we are killing the delicate balance that keeps everything on Earth alive.

Celebrate Draw-A-Bird Day by asking your leaders to do something to save our planet, so we can have more birds, not less, and a better and richer life for all.
