Zero

fool tarot card s

I always draw the Fool card.  Zero.  Nothing and everything.  It becomes whatever is added to it, but if it is multiplied, it returns to itself.  Dividing it is impossible.

My life has been a patchwork, unpredictable. The best laid plans always come up with new ways to fall apart.  Sometimes this is a good thing, but I never know if that’s true until later.

An April Fool haibun for the dVerse prompt on Monday which I missed, and for Colleen’s #TankaTuesday poets-choice-of-words.  I’m also linking to dVerse Open Link Night.

Fields of Dreams

jackie robinson 1s text

A haiga for Colleen’s tanka Tuesday words, hobby and play.  There is a long tradition of baseball haiku, both in Japan and America.

I first thought of Rickey Henderson when I considered sketching a base stealer, but then I discovered that Jackie Robinson was the major league leader in steals of home in the modern era–he did it 19 times–so I used photos of him as my inspiration.  Just one small part of his extraordinary legacy.

This second haiga is for Frank Tassone’s challenge of swallows.  When Ken at rivrvlogr posted his response, it reminded me that the place I see swallows in NYC is at the ball park–clearly stadiums have good nesting places.  And always plenty of dreams.

I’m definitely out of practice with my sketching, and I forgot how difficult it is to draw catchers.  But Opening Day is just around the corner…

A bit of fun, using synonyms for spring and sing, Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday prompt words this week.  When I was looking at the thesaurus for synonyms, all the stock phrases jumped out at me, reminding me of a post I did a few years ago.  I’ve recycled the art and the idea into an etheree.

Unmasked

unmasked s

This face is not the one I wore yesterday. Recast as abstraction, it chases illusions that will pilot my borrowed dreams.  Today I am a galaxy of song, light, color and dance.

If I turn around
will I recollect myself
or pass myself by?

A haibun for the dVerse prompt of Mardi Gras, using synonyms for Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday words “follow” and “lead”.  The collage is based on a Cajun Mardi Gras mask.  I also made the haibun a quadrille of 44 words after being inspired by Jane and Merril’s use of this very short form.

Draw-a-Bird Day: Barn Owl

A mirror cinquain for Colleen’s #tanka Tuesday, poet’s choice of words.

I love the faces of owls.  The barn owl can look quite ghostly, especially at night, and yet there are also many colors reflected in the feathers.  Barn owls are found almost everywhere in the world.

The Owl can be the familiar to Athena’s wisdom or to Lilith as goddess of Death.  Or both at the same time, perhaps.

Night Visions (Moon Totem #2)

A nonet for Colleen’s #TankaTuesday with synonyms for origin and write.

I did a bunch of these moon totems in 2017 and meant to do more, but the project got sidetracked by life.  I found this one in a drawer…I know the others are around somewhere.  Perhaps they are hiding with the birdlings, also missing since I moved.

Colleen’s #tanka Tuesday words this week are meaning and passion.  The winds have certainly been impassioned here of late.

Happy Valentine’s Day!  I hope all your loved ones are on their way home.

To answer with love–
fragments pieced together like
a mystery solved

Colleen’s prompt this week was to write a love poem.  There are some wonderful poets of love here on WordPress (you know who you are) but that is definitely outside my comfort zone.  Still, I will certainly be sending some Valentines, and so I wrote a poem for the intended recipients.

As Colleen has introduced haiga as a form for her #Tanka Tuesday, I decided to integrate my words and art this week as well.

For Colleen’s #Tanka Tuesday words, slow and work, also using the Secret Keeper’s words this week: rock joint inner sight sail.  And perhaps a hint of the harbinger, suggested by Sarah at dVerse.
